Ed Sheeran is the most popular artist on Spotify. As usual, the streaming service releases its annual Year in Music lists and the British redhead is named the most streamed performer in 2017 after raking in a total of 6.3 billion plays this year alone.
Also nabbing the title of the Most Streamed Male Artist of 2017, Sheeran dethroned Drake who became the site’s most streamed artist in 2015 and 2016. In the most recent list, the Canadian rapper sits at No. 2.
Sheeran also manages to top other Spotify lists thanks to his latest album and hits. Last March’s “[Divide]” becomes the most streamed album this year with around 3.1 billion streams globally, easily trumping Drake’s “More Life”, Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” and The Weeknd’s “Starboy”.
Additionally, “Shape of You” which was released as the LP’s lead single takes the Most Streamed Track of the Year title with over 1.4 billion from listeners all around the world. The song outshines other smashing hits of the year, including Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”, as well as the remix featuring Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers’ “Something Just Like This” featuring Coldplay, and DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One”.
Most of the lists are dominated by male performers, except the Most Streamed Female Artist category of course, which is topped by none other than Rihanna. This is the Bajan singer’s third time in a row to come atop the list. She’s followed by fellow big names like Taylor Swift, who made her music available on the site again earlier this year, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Sia.
