Ed Sheeran Is Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist This Year

Ed Sheeran is the most popular artist on Spotify. As usual, the streaming service releases its annual Year in Music lists and the British redhead is named the most streamed performer in 2017 after raking in a total of 6.3 billion plays this year alone.

Also nabbing the title of the Most Streamed Male Artist of 2017, Sheeran dethroned Drake who became the site’s most streamed artist in 2015 and 2016. In the most recent list, the Canadian rapper sits at No. 2.

Sheeran also manages to top  other Spotify lists thanks to his latest album and hits. Last March’s “[Divide]” becomes the most streamed album this year with around 3.1 billion streams globally, easily trumping Drake’s “More Life”, Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” and The Weeknd’s “Starboy”.

Additionally, “Shape of You” which was released as the LP’s lead single takes the Most Streamed Track of the Year title with over 1.4 billion from listeners all around the world. The song outshines other smashing hits of the year, including Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito”, as well as the remix featuring Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers’ “Something Just Like This” featuring Coldplay, and DJ Khaled’s “I’m the One”.

Most of the lists are dominated by male performers, except the Most Streamed Female Artist category of course, which is topped by none other than Rihanna. This is the Bajan singer’s third time in a row to come atop the list. She’s followed by fellow big names like Taylor Swift, who made her music available on the site again earlier this year, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Sia.

Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Adele either don’t release their albums on Spotify, or release it later. It’s their conscious decision to prioritize physical album sales or their own investments (Tidal) over streaming. And it’s worked great for them.

Even though I never listen to him Spotify suggested him in every discover weekly playlist for months. This wasn’t just happening me and I and my friends don’t listen to that type of music. I swear Spotify was helping him

Gave my best friends nearly-teen children a lift down south for a couple of hours and made the fatal mistake of allowing them to connect into the car stereo having asked “what music do you like?”. Two hours later I’d been Sheeraned to death with a side-kicking of Taylor Swift. This stuff is awful! OMG I had no idea it’s so bad, soulless and sad. I couldn’t understand how these pleasant children were attracted to such miserable dreck but they are.

It’s surprising he did not get more Grammy nominations (although he has won before).
