Elon Musk Plans Futuristic Underground Tunnels to Beat Traffic

Just like everyone else on earth, Elon Musk hates traffic jams. But unlike lots of people on this planet, the super-billionaire may have a solution for the problem.

Along with the Boring Company he owns, Musk is working on a network of underground tunnels in which cars can travel in high speed. He showed off the first visualization of the project, led by SpaceX engineer Steve Davis, during his TED Talk in Vancouver recently.

In a video screened at the event and now available on YouTube, a car is seen brought underground and is then placed into an electric skate that will transport it through the tunnel at a maximum speed of 130 mph. “You should be able to get from Westwood to LAX in 5 to 6 minutes,” Musk explained in a chat with TED’s ead curator Chris Anderson.

“You have to be able to integrate the entrance and exit of a tunnel seamlessly into the fabric of the city,” Musk further said. “So by having an elevator, sort of a car skate that’s on an elevator, you can integrate the entrance and exits to the tunnel network just by using two parking spaces.”

The project is already underway as a 10-metre-wide test trench has already been dug on the grounds of SpaceX’s Los Angeles headquarters. However, don’t expect the project to finish soon, because it’s not even Musk’s priority. He said that the Boring Company’s only taking “2 or 3 percent” of his time. Interns and Tesla employees are working on the project part-time.

Do you think the tunnels will really be a solution to the city congestions everyone’s been dealing with? Will you want the futuristic structure be built in your country? Sound off your opinion in the comment section below.(dth/gaekon)
