Tony Awards 2017: It’s Time for “Dear Evan Hansen” to Dominate the Winner List

The 71st Tony Awards held on June 11, 2017, was a big night for “Dear Evan Hansen”. In the award night specialized to honor Broadway musical and theatrical performances, “Dear Evan Hansen” was successfully crowned as the winner for the Best New Musical category. Not only that, the masterpiece of Steven Levenson was also nominated in other 8 categories. Seems like is the year for Evan Hansen.

Dear Evan Hansen” covers the story you can find in daily school life. But the combination of Steven Levenson ideas and Oscar-winning songwriter Benj Pasek and Justin Paul’s songs make it look a bit extraordinary to our senses. Evan Hansen is a shy, lonely, and nerdy high school student who suffers severe social anxiety, the kind of kid that won’t fit in any social group. And he must fumble with lies, misperception, rumor, and loss during his senior year. Sounds like just another high school life story for you? Wait until you see how Michael Grief directs the whole stage and changes the so-ordinary plot into a heart-touching performance. Moreover, Ben Platt’s award winning act is so real that you’ll think he is actually a mentally-troubled high-schooler.

That’s what made “Dear Evan Hansen” beat the 3 other Best New Musical nominees, ″Groundhog Day the Musical”, “Come From Away,” and “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.” And thanks to Ben Platt and Rachel Bay Jones’ A-class acting, the musical show also successfully collected 5 trophies. The 20-minute show also won the Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Lead Actor in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Orchestrations category.
