WhatsApp to Stop Support for BlackBerry and Windows Phones

As the new year approaches, WhatsApp is bidding farewell to phones with older operating systems. The Facebook-owned application has announced that it would end support for devices running on Blackberry OS as well as some Windows phones. Specifically, it would no longer support every BlackBerry phone, including those running on BlackBerry 10, and Windows Phone 8.0 and older starting on December 31.

This means, the messaging service will continue to work on these platforms. But after the forthcoming weekend, users won’t be able to create new accounts or re-verify existing accounts. Meanwhile, those with Windows phones running on 8.1 and above shouldn’t have to worry.

However, WhatsApp claimed that the app could stop functioning at any time, so owners of phones with the aforemetioned devices may want to start considering a new Android or Apple phone for the new year.

Tech company collusion to drive new device sales. Ios 8 is perfectly viable, no need to upgrade unless forced to.

I plan to cut my use of WhatsApp on…oh…hang on…I’ve never used it. I’m not even sure what it does. Joys of old age I suppose.

It would keep you in touch with your grandchildren, regardless of where they live. We use it to communicate with our youngest in New Zealand as well as others. It makes free internet phone calls, phone to phone, which matter for someone overseas.

You can send pictures and videos that cost nothing (over wifi) while they cost a lot if you text them.

You can create groups of people who see everything just in that group. So we have one with me, my wife and the youngest. Academics create them for people who work in the same area.

I probably use it more than email these days to talk to friends and family. I’m 52.

Ask your grandkids if they use it.

Blackberry stilk had a way to use whatsapp through android runtime. Unfortunately blackberry hasn’t done anything to update the runtime and even now its on android 4.2. Thing is, blackberry is not serious at all.
