I know you’re so proud of your work that you want to claim it as the best advertisement ever made. But humans make mistakes. So get a rest for a moment and thoroughly check your ad once again. You’ll notice some flaws that are invisible before. Do this a few times and you’ll have a perfect masterpiece in your hands.

What Are the Judging Criteria?

A category may have different judging criteria from others. To maximize your winning opportunity, try to accentuate the judging points on your ad. Knowing the exact vital area to hit is the cleverest strategy to win the competition.

Major First Impact

Two D&AD winners, Tom Manning and Anna Barton, suggest the same thing when it comes to explaining ideas to judges. “Remember, judges will initially spend 5 minutes looking at your work. Don’t let their minds wander – get straight to the point,” said Barton.

I know that you’ve probably heard this thousands of times, but seriously, simplicity is truly important. Whether it’s your brief, design, or copy, make sure you wrap it in the simplest way you can think of. Aside from making the ad easier to digest, simplicity doubles the information transfer rate, resulting in a more efficient advertisement. And this quality is what judges look for in an ad.

Don’t hang your hopes just in one idea. Create as many ideas as you can and turn them into great advertisements. Because having a few great ideas is always better than just having one. But if some of your ideas turn out to be bad, don’t be afraid to throw them away. Take the advice from Tom Manning, “Be brave enough to kill an idea that isn’t working. But love your experiments as you would an ugly child.”

Success doesn’t come instantly. You need to work on your skills to win a prestigious advertising competition like D&AD. Try to enter smaller competitions, go to advertising workshops, get advice from experts, or work for some clients. You can do this in Gaekon. Gaekon has a wide range of advertising contests and clients from around the world. You can shape up your skill, connect, and bring home big prizes as a bonus. Oh, did I mention you can sign up for free?

Print the brief, read it, highlight it, cut it up, rearrange it, and then forget about it. Fill up on culture, cartoons and quotes, let your mind drift and your subconscious will do the hard work.
