Video: Japanese Man Excels at Drawing in Microsoft Excel

Anything could be turned into masterpieces. A Japanese man named Tatsuo Horiuchi proved that by showing off paintings he made using what could be the weirdest medium to paint so far, which is Microsoft Excel.

In a video posted on YouTube by Great Big Story, Horiuchi himself explained that he turned to the software because he’s “stingy.” After his retirement in 2000, the 77-year-old thought of painting though due to his cheapness, he refused to spend his money on paints or waste time mixing them with water.

He didn’t even want to buy an art program, so began using Excel that’s already installed in his computer at the time and using cheap printer to print his paintings, which mostly focus on Japanese landscape.

“I started painting with Excel in 2000. I set a goal. In 10 years, I wanted to paint something decent that I could show to people,” Horiuchi said of his decision. But the 17 years he spent painting in Excel weren’t easy. He said that people often see it as something stupid.

“There are many people who make fun of me. ‘Why are you making effort on something that is not useful, are you a fool?’ “ he recalled what people said about him, before adding, “Yes I’m a fool. But I think that even if you don’t have talent for paintings, you can paint as long as you have Excel.”

Horiuchi then admitted that it’s hard to sell paintings, so he’s going to appreciate it if someone is actually interested in buying his artworks. And if you want to buy his paintings, you can reach out to him through email [email protected]
