Watch What You Drink: Poo Bacteria Found in KFC, McDonald’s, and Burger King’s Ice

Again with BBC Watchdog.

Now the television investigation program came to investigate three world’s famous fast food restaurants, KFC, McDonald’s, and Burger King. Though we trust the credibility of these big names, the hygiene of their drinks are a bit worrying. Because the scientists have found faecal bacteria in the randomly selected drink in these restaurants.

The samples were tested for coliforms to identify the faecal contaminations. Some of the samples display a positive result. And the number was significant. Among 10 samples acquired randomly from 30 outlets, there are 7 contaminated samples from KFC, 3 from McDonald’s, and 6 from Burger King. DEFRA (UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs) has announced that any water to be consumed by human shouldn’t contain any bacteria inside, but these samples prove the regulation isn’t noticed by everyone.

But actually, where is this bacteria come from?

Apparently, coliforms detected in some of the drinks and ice samples are usually found in faecal matter. The contamination occurred because the staff didn’t properly wash their hands after taking a wee and then directly touched the equipment for serving ice. Eww! Looks like these restaurants need to give extra hygiene class to their staff.

Shocked by the investigation result, these 3 major fast food restaurants gave immediate responses.  “We are shocked and extremely disappointed by these results,” said a KFC spokesperson. “We have strict procedures for the management and handling of ice, including daily and weekly inspections and cleaning of the ice machine and storage holds, as well as the routine testing of ice quality across our business.” The tested KFC outlet then immediately shut down their ice machines and did a thorough hygiene inspection. They also reinforced their strict procedures to all staff.

Meanwhile Burger King responded, “This report is an opportunity for us to emphasize our training procedures and ensure all operations and safety standards are upheld in all Burger King restaurants.” And McDonald’s said that BBC Watchdog investigation made them “happy to work with relevant industry bodies on ensuring a standard for ice contamination.”

This is not good. KFC, McDonald’s, Burger Kings all of these are highly respective and popular food courts around the world. These brands should have been more careful to their ice making platform.

IKR they should pay more attention to their food and drink ingredient so that kind of things didn’t happen
